2024 DDLM Art Exhibition

Alebrijes - fantastical animal creatures painted in bright colorful patterns - are the theme of the 2024 Dia de los Muertos Art Exhibition.  Alebrijes celebrate and honor the magic of creativity, and the beauty of a more ethereal and spiritual world. They are are special because no two are ever alike. Every artisan who designs one gives the spiritual animal its own unique traits and personality.

The first alebrijes were created in 1936 by Mexican papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares. He invented the fantastical creatures after becoming sick and hallucinating strange animals, including a donkey with wings and a rooster who had the body of a frog. In his dream, the animals chanted a nonsense word, which today we know as “alebrijes”.

Nowadays, Alebrijes are commonly made from wood and sold in Mexican curios shops. However, for this exhibition, we are accepting all visual art forms - three-dimensional and  two-dimensional.  The artists who participate in this exhibition may put their own spin on this theme and bring the idea of alebrijes to the next level! The exhibition will be displayed in K Space Contemporary's Starr Gallery October 12 – November 8, 2024.
