Ofrendas (Altars) honor, remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed. Items on the altars help to lead their spirits home for the Days of the Dead on November 1st and 2nd.

We invite community members to create ofrendas for this special Dia de los Muertos event,

including businesses, families, individuals, youth, K-12 school groups, non-profit organizations

and special interest groups. Ofrendas may honor families, friends, or a group of people, such as military heroes, celebrities, writers, activists, community leaders, etc.

The 2024 Community Ofrenda Display will be in the former Ward Building on Chaparral at the corner of Peoples St. There are no walls within this space, so all ofrendas must be free-standing.  Special Thanks to the Nueces Lofts for allowing us to use this space for this special display.

Each group, club, organization, or individual may enter ONE altar. Note: Participating local K-12 School Groups will receive a $50 art supply stipend.

Size: The altar may not exceed 8 feet in width or 6 feet in depth.

Stand Alone: altars should be stand-alone structures. Participants must bring their own tables, temporary walls, and display structures (boxes, shelves, tablecloths, etc.). Altars will NOT back up against a wall. Drilling, nailing, or tacking into the walls is prohibited. Command 3M damage-free hooks may be used on the walls to hang light-weight items, fabric, or twinkle lights.

Lighting: The building does not have electricity. Organizers will provide general lighting, however electricity will NOT be provided for individual ofrendas. You may use battery-operated candles, tea lights or string lights for your ofrenda, or bring your own battery pack to plug into. Flammables (wax/wick candles) and generators are strictly prohibited.

No Sales Please: We wish to maintain a sense of reverence and memoriam for the deceased honored in the altar display. Therefore, sales from altars and inside the display are not allowed. If you wish to sell arts, crafts, or food items, you must apply for an outdoor booth through our Arts and Crafts Expo application.

Security: Do not leave valuable items or original photographs on your ofrenda. Leave copies of photos rather than originals. Attendants will be stationed in the display during open hours. You may station an attendant with your altar during the event if you so choose. At closing time, attendants will usher remaining visitors out, then close and lock the doors.
